The history of therapeutic gardens is explored in this wiki through geographical, cultural and historical perspectives. This page is an English overview of Istoria Grădinii Terapeutice, which contains the extended account, illustrations and bibliography.

Historical development

[edit | edit source]

The Romanian essay follows six connected themes:

  1. Gardens associated with healing in antiquity.
  2. Gardens within spiritual and initiatory traditions.
  3. Medieval monastery gardens and the early relationship between enclosed gardens and places of care.
  4. Renewed interest in healing landscapes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
  5. The development of modern therapeutic gardens in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
  6. The characteristics that make a garden therapeutic in a particular setting.

From cultural precedent to a designed environment

[edit | edit source]

The historical account brings together different reasons for cultivating gardens: food and medicinal plants, contemplation, sensory enjoyment, shelter, social contact and meaningful activity. These functions can coexist, but the history of a practice and evidence of its effectiveness are separate questions.

For GTI, the historical material provides a design vocabulary and a basis for comparison. Planting, paths, shade, enclosure and places to rest should be considered in relation to the users, the site and the intended activities.
